Chlamydia. The still undisputed, unchallenged, undefeated cause of irreversible infertility in women, is also the post common STD in the Philippines. It affects both men and women of all ages, and are often silent or subclinical. And though it is easily treated by regular antibiotic, it often goes unrecognized and therefore untreated, until it's too late.
Chlamydia can be transmitted via unprotected genital, oral, and anal sex. It can infect almost the entire reproductive system aswell as the throat and the eyes. If left on its own, in will create irreversible damage to ones capacity to reproduce, and may often lead to increase risk of ectopic pregnancies, which could be potentially fatal.
Unknown to most, these seemily benign infection aggressively attacks the fallopian tube leading to irrepairable scarring. It could spill in to the pelvic floor causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, which often leads to sepsis and death. It could get in the eyes and cause chlamydia conjuctivitis, causing prolonged eye infection and corneal scarring. It leads to premature labor among pregnant, infected women. Babies born to chlamydia infected mothers often develop sepsis and fail to thrive.
Chlamydia often go unrecognized. This and the culture of easy sex leads to an uncontrolled epidemic today. Condom had already been proven ineffective in containing transmission. And this is one unfortunate truth among the sexually adventurous.
In a time where modern technology and research reached its peak, prevention of this man made medical calamity can only be prevented, contained and eventually extinguished by moral strength. A deliberate move towards long term, monogamous relationship remains the only plausible answer to prevent this holocaust.
